'Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda' Letter to the Author

Becky Albertalli

In this blog post, I am going to be "sending" the author of Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, Becky Albertalli a letter. In this I am going to be telling her what I like about the book so far, asking what the protagonist, Simon means to her, and where she overall got the inspiration to write this book. In a short summary, it is written in the first person by a junior in high school named Simon who struggles with his sexual orientation. The book explores how he will deal with his new found reality, plus the typical problems of a teenage boy. We watch Simon learn to grow, love, forgive, and learn through his friends and family. In my opinion, this story is a touching insight into what it may be like for kids who are going through the same thing, and how the rest of us should really just be supportive. It talks of the protagonist being bullied for his decisions but we see this hate overrun by the love that surrounds him. I think this book is perfect for any teenager to read to learn acceptance, and tolerance of all ways of life. I believe it is essential that kids this day in age must have that skill.

Dear Mrs. Becky Albertalli,
First, let me start off by saying I really am fond of your book, I did not choose this book but it was lent to me by a friend for one of my high school English reading periods as I didn't like the first book I had chosen. I sure am happy about this coincidence because I finished your book in 2 days! It's witty, relatable, and the characters are to die for. I really appreciate how you add many references to the real world such as 'Waffle House', this makes your writing all the more interesting, and honestly, engulfs the reader deeper into the story. I have a few questions I want to ask you about the story itself and where you found inspiration for writing the book. May I ask where, and how you were able to develop such a strong character in Simon. Did you perhaps base him off a buy you know, or one of your family members? The way the reader gets to know Simon seems like he's almost a real person, we are undoubtedly let into his darkest, and deepest thoughts that we watch him uncover piece by piece. On the back cover, Tim Federle even says "Are we absolutely certain that Albertalli didn't just steal the diary of a hilariously observant teenage boy?". I couldn't agree more that this seriously could be where you got all of the ideas that go on in a 17-year-old boy mind down to a "T". Also on a more personal level, what really inspired you to write this book. What event or topic in your life pushed you to write about such an important issue in eery day life? All writers have a prerogative, something they hope to achieve, I was wonder what was yours?  I looked on the internet for such an answer but it just wasn't there. You obviously must be involved in some way with the LGBT community and I'm interested to find out how. Your passion for what you were writing was obviously present and somewhat compelling. I do not know much about the LGBT community, so this book seriously was an eye - opener on what others can do to help.  I saw the strong support of Leah, Nick, and Abby along with his mom, dad, Nora and even those in his school.  I hope if I am ever faced with a situation as such I can be of the same support to whoever may need it. I really appreciate this book and it is very timely that I read it just after finishing The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I look forward to reading other books of yours and hope that you work closely with the directors of the film adaptation to bring a great movie. I am very excited about what this book has done for me and look forward to hearing what it will do for others. Thank you so much, and keep writing terrific books!

Sincerely,
MacKenna W.

//By the way on Pg. 217 I found the word "incredulously" used in context from our spelling quiz this past week. It was used in "She turned to Nick incredulously, Did you know?" I couldn't resist from making that connection, how useful huh?//
